Canoeing/Fishing

7-9th grade

Sunday:   The first order of business is registration.  Please be on time as we have much to do today.  We’ll be teaming up with the other wilderness group for our pre-trip preparations.  This will include:

  • personal gear shakedown and repacking,
  • food
  • and camp gear distribution.

We’ll spend some time getting to know one-another and doing some team-building exercises.  Tonight we’ll stay at Fowler’s wilderness area.

Monday:   Our plan for today is to break camp and get across Sacandaga Lake to camp on the far side. There are plenty of fishing options from here and we intend to try them all. Let’s check out the Hatchery Brook outlet and try to catch diner.

Tuesday:   After a hearty breakfast, we’ll pack a bag lunch and head over to Fawn Lake. We have to portage our canoes a half mile to get there. But the beach at Fawn will be a welcome site. We’ll be hoping that the pike and bass like our bait when we get there! We'll paddle to the far point on Fawn and have a wonderfully secluded site....

But....

Wednesday:   Not as secluded as tonight! Today will require teamwork and some good map and compass skills. We will follow the lightly marked trail over to Vly Lake. Some friends from camp will be paddling new canoes up for us. We'll take them after setting up camp and spend the majority of the day fishing this wonderful Adirondack Lake. Maybe we'll have fresh fish for dinner tonight!

Thursday:   The mantra for today is: 'stroke, stroke, stroke.' Our task is to paddle down Fall Stream into Piseco Lake and then to the South West corner into Big Bay. We'll be ready for this challenge by now as we will have perfected our camping skills. Our last night out will be at a primitive site on Big Bay. Let's hope the stars

Friday:   Our last day on the trail and, we will paddle back to camp sometime in the afternoon. Not before we throw our lines in for at least one more chance! Our evening back at Fowler will be a time of singing, sharing, and celebrating.

Saturday:   Rise and shine.  Bring our gear to Summit house and enjoy breakfast at Suits Hall before being reunited with your family.  We’ll have some time to swap addresses and say farewell to our newfound friends and the Adirondacks…but only until next year!
